National CânSing Day 2014 - [13/05/2014]

We are holding our fourth National CânSing Day on Thursday, 19th of June. Schools from across Wales involved in CanSing are encouraged to celebrate their achievements on this day; bringing pupils together and uniting voices, by using the CânSing resources. These are available at www.cansing.org.uk.

We are delighted that so many schools are taking up the opportunity to celebrate their achievements with CânSing. It demonstrates the success of the project, and we are confident that the experience will have a lasting impression on teachers and children, and will encourage them to use their voices today and well into the future.

Our team of six Animateurs will be participating in numerous singing workshops and activities across Wales including Denbighshire, Conwy, Wrexham, Pembrokeshire, Cardiff, Swansea and RCT.

To celebrate National CânSing Day we will be releasing new resources on the website and a CânSing Day Pack and new songs including:

•    Canon in D (swingle style)

•    Amazing Grace

•    The Holly (Y Gelynnen –Welsh Folk Song)

Also CânSing, in partnership with Welsh National Opera, are launching a new trilingual (French, English and Welsh) educational version of the 'Toreador Song', from Bizet's Carmen.  This will be premiered on National CânSing Day with the first performance to be held in a combined Wrexham Schools performance with professional opera soloist.

Welcome to the CânSing website - [12/11/2013]

We have been recording new songs and filming new, teacher -focused, tutorial videos. I certainly hope you enjoy our new Christmas resources – please do share recordings of your school/choir/group performing, we would love to add these to our website.

This year, another 200 schools will participate in CânSing training – and we have delivered several training days already this term and others are planned – if you know of a school who hasn’t yet engaged with CânSing – please do get in touch.

No doubt, many of you will have read the recent ‘Arts in Education Review’ report and the recommendations. We were pleased to see the CânSing project mentioned so positively and hope that this report will help us to demonstrate how much teachers utilise the resources and training offered via the programme.

If you wish to get in touch with me, please email suzanne.barnes@castcymru.org.uk

CânSing also now has a recording of the full BBC National Orchestra of Wales performing “Sing Out Loud” – the signature song composed by Einion Dafydd and arranged for orchestra by Gareth Glyn. This means that pupils can actually perform with the backing of a full symphony Orchestra. The backing tracks can be found (from Friday) at: “Sing Out Loud”

Many thanks to the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for making this possible.

Please do let us know how you are celebrating National CânSing Day; we would be grateful for any photos (with permission) or stories as we will be creating a special edition of the Bulletin in early July and it would be great to show the many events that are happening all over Wales on Friday. If you use Twitter, please tweet about your event using #cs2013.

Wishing you all a Happy National CânSing Day 2013 – let’s get fired up for singing!

National CânSing Day! - [11/06/2013]

National CânSing Day!

Hundreds of children across Wales will have the opportunity to celebrate their involvement in the ‘CânSing’programme on Friday 21 June 2013.

CânSing is now in its fourth year, managed by CaST Cymru (formerly ContinYou Cymru), and funded by the Welsh Government. The programme targets pupils in Years 5, 6 and 7 and offers a training, bespoke support programme and curriculum-linked resources to support the teaching of singing across Wales.

Schools across all Welsh local authorities have taken part in the scheme, and on National CânSing Day are invited to celebrate their achievements. Many teachers have chosen to work with other nearby schools and will be bringing pupils together to unite voices by using the CânSing resources.

CaST Cymru is delighted that so many schools are taking up this opportunity to celebrate their achievements with CânSing.  CânSing is hugely successful and we are confident that the experience is having a lasting impression on both teachers and children alike, encouraging them to use their voices today and well into the future. This is our third National CânSing Day and the support for and interest in the programme continues to grow. CânSing has funding until March 2014 but the future beyond that is, as yet unknown so it is vital that schools are enabled to showcase their success.

Education Minister, Leighton Andrews said:

“CânSing has been designed to improve standards and opportunities for singing in schools and to motivate and engage learners, helping them develop essential skills such as team work, communication and confidence .

“I’m pleased that the programme is having such a positive impact on a variety of aspects of young people’s development, and it was for this reason that I awarded the project nearly £245,000 of funding earlier this year.

“I look forward to attending National CânSing Day later this week, and offer the schools and organisers involved my best wishes for a very successful event.”

There are CânSing Day events happening all over Wales and the six CânSing Animateurs (Vocal Coaches) are very busy attending events in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Conwy, Powys and RCT.

Best wishes
