CânSing also now has a recording of the full BBC National Orchestra of Wales performing “Sing Out Loud” – the signature song composed by Einion Dafydd and arranged for orchestra by Gareth Glyn. This means that pupils can actually perform with the backing of a full symphony Orchestra. The backing tracks can be found (from Friday) at: “Sing Out Loud”

Many thanks to the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for making this possible.

Please do let us know how you are celebrating National CânSing Day; we would be grateful for any photos (with permission) or stories as we will be creating a special edition of the Bulletin in early July and it would be great to show the many events that are happening all over Wales on Friday. If you use Twitter, please tweet about your event using #cs2013.

Wishing you all a Happy National CânSing Day 2013 – let’s get fired up for singing!

National CânSing Day!

Hundreds of children across Wales will have the opportunity to celebrate their involvement in the ‘CânSing’programme on Friday 21 June 2013.

CânSing is now in its fourth year, managed by CaST Cymru (formerly ContinYou Cymru), and funded by the Welsh Government. The programme targets pupils in Years 5, 6 and 7 and offers a training, bespoke support programme and curriculum-linked resources to support the teaching of singing across Wales.

Schools across all Welsh local authorities have taken part in the scheme, and on National CânSing Day are invited to celebrate their achievements. Many teachers have chosen to work with other nearby schools and will be bringing pupils together to unite voices by using the CânSing resources.

CaST Cymru is delighted that so many schools are taking up this opportunity to celebrate their achievements with CânSing.  CânSing is hugely successful and we are confident that the experience is having a lasting impression on both teachers and children alike, encouraging them to use their voices today and well into the future. This is our third National CânSing Day and the support for and interest in the programme continues to grow. CânSing has funding until March 2014 but the future beyond that is, as yet unknown so it is vital that schools are enabled to showcase their success.

Education Minister, Leighton Andrews said:

“CânSing has been designed to improve standards and opportunities for singing in schools and to motivate and engage learners, helping them develop essential skills such as team work, communication and confidence .

“I’m pleased that the programme is having such a positive impact on a variety of aspects of young people’s development, and it was for this reason that I awarded the project nearly £245,000 of funding earlier this year.

“I look forward to attending National CânSing Day later this week, and offer the schools and organisers involved my best wishes for a very successful event.”

There are CânSing Day events happening all over Wales and the six CânSing Animateurs (Vocal Coaches) are very busy attending events in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Conwy, Powys and RCT.

 New CânSing You Tube Channel

I am pleased to announce the launch of the new CânSing YouTube Channel. All of the CânSing exercise video clips are now available to view on “cansingcymru” on You Tube  – this is a new and exciting development for the project.

As requested by many of our ‘members’ we have also added a collection of recordings of our repertoire by various artists. These can be used for comparison and appraisal during music or singing session in school.

The new YouTube Channel will also make it possible for you to accessthe CânSing video material on numerous electronic devices e.g. androids / iPads / smartphones.

You can find our channel by searching 'cansingcymru' on the YouTube channel or app.

We hope you find this addition useful.

Best wishes

Funding Success!

We are delighted to be able to announce that the Minister for Education, Leighton Andrews, has approved funding for CânSing for the next financial year. Not only will this mean that the current resources and support will remain available but also that another 200 schools in Wales will benefit from the training programme between April 2013 – March 2014.

There will be 3 new Song Support sheets appearing on the site within the next week:

- We are the world (Ni yw y byd - Gruff Rhys)

- I got rhythm (George Gershwin)

- Lean on me (Bill Whithers)

Many thanks to your continued support – particularly those who provided evidence for the proposal.

With best wishes

Suzanne

Song ofthe Shepherds

The Song of the Shepherds by Welsh composer Gareth Glyn and lyrics by his wife Eleri Cwyfan has been part of the repertoire www.cansing.org.uk web site for some time now. This has been a very popular song and has been used extensively by schools across Wales specifically for concerts / Christmas services.

This year the Welsh version of the song has been included as part of the Urdd National Eisteddfod texts which will be held in Pembrokeshire. It is included for the Parti Bechgyn (Boys party) competition for Year 7 - 9.

On our web site there is a  Song Sheet Support which provides guidance on how to go about learning the song effectively. In addition there is a link to vocal exercises that can be done during rehearsals. There are scores of the music notation available for download as well as an interactive screen to practice in a classroom with an Interactive White board or projector. You can also downloaded mp3 tracks in order to practice because the full track, track without voices and individual parts tracks.

Good luck if you intend to compete this year, why not send us your performance as an example of good practice or create a video for our new YouTube channel?

Happy New Year!

We hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas break – we look forward to working with you in 2013.
