CânSing is a national singing development programme pilot, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government (Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills), managed by ContinYou Cymru, and supported by a national advisory group.

This advisory group, which was established to steer the project, includes representatives from primary, secondary and special schools, music advisors, music services and representatives fromDCELLS and the Arts Council ofWales (ACW).

The aim of the pilot project is to raise the standard of singing in schools across Wales by delivering high-quality training and resources for teachers and learners in Key Stages 2 and 3, especially for Years 5, 6 and 7. In addition, CânSing aims to promote the use of singing as a vehicle for building confidence and self-esteem, improving literacy and increasing community engagement.

The pilot commenced in July 2009 and CânSing has been developing ‘behind the scenes’ since then – designing, developing and triallingthe training programme and a wealth of cutting-edge resources, which are currently being rolled out to teachers across Wales.

The training is available to 24 teachers per local authority, and will be delivered on a cluster basis to support transition links. Each participating school receives two training days and additional support from a professional singing Animateur, provided locally.

The CânSing launch (30.09.2010) represents an opportunity to showcase the resources and demonstrate public support for the programme and its achievements so far. To date, teachers from Flintshire, Gwynedd, Ynys Mon, Carmarthenshire, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Powys have received training and are already using the resources. Following the launch, the programme will be offered to every local authority in Wales.

Schools that wish to be considered for participation in this pilot should contact their local Music Curriculum Adviser or Music Service Lead, who will influence which 24 schools will

be selected in each area.
